Orissa is a state where natural resources occur in abundance. But for a variety of reasons these resources remained unutilized and Orissa to-day is amongst the poorest states of the country. The absence of adequately qualified technical personnel to suitably convert the natural resources into useful products was the motivating force for me to conceive the idea of setting up an Engineering College.Cuttack the former capital is the oldest city of the State. Its cultural and artistic heritages are spell binding.
However for reasons which are inexplicable it did not have any Technological Institutions worth the name. Precisely for this reason the several small scale industries that were set up as Pilot Projects could not blossom into full-fledged industries, sooner or later the shutters were drawn and the industry was declared as sick . Cuttack naturally then became the choice for the venue of the Institution.
In the year 1993 an Architectural College, named after the renowned Architect Mr. Piloo Mody was set up in Badambadi, Cuttack. In fact it was the crusading zeal of the Parliamentarian Mr. Mody, which was responsible for the enactment of Architecture Act, 1972. It may be pertinent to mention here that on the eastern coast of the country this was then the only college of its kind.
In November 1998 the first step was taken in hiring the industrial shed in C- 12, Khapuria for setting up the Engineering Wing of the College. Due to approval of A.I.C.T.E, sanction of Govt. of Orissa and affiliation of Utkal University were obtained on priority and thus A.B.I.T came into existence.
Mr. Ajaya Bhuyan and Mr. Binaya Mishra were leading industrialists of the State who had rendered yeoman service for the cause of the Industry. To commemorate their untimely accidental demise and their contribution towards Industrialization of the city of Cuttack a trust was created in their name. Ajaya-Binay Institute of Technology (A.B.I.T as it is called) is an offshoot of this trust.
In a planned locality of the city known as Markat Nagar an area of five acre has been already acquired and advance for another five acre has been paid for building Permanent infrastructure of the Institute. The famous Architect Mr. Prabir Mitra of Kolkata has designed the master plan and work on the site shall soon commence. The faculty is almost fully staffed with people who will be acceptable anywhere. The Laboratories are completely furnished and fully operational. The College Library has sufficient number of text and reference books. Despite the handicap of temporary accommodation the cultural activity of the students are accorded top priority. There is absolutely no confusion, neither any chaos during examination owing to strict discipline imposed by the management. There are four hostels two each for Architecture and Engineering out of the four two are meant for the Ladies.
Till date the results of the Institution both in Engineering and Architecture is commendable. It is the wish and desire of the Board of Trustees that this Institution in years to come should be most sought after Institution for aspiring Engineers and Architects.
